For Beijing Design Week, we were asked to design an entrance space for the TimeOut Beijing pavilion. The site was located in an old car parts factory warehouse in Dashilar alley, a historic hutong adjacent to Tiananmen square. Timeout was host and helping to promote a group of local fashion designers and entrepreneurs. The theme was Timeout’s wardrobe. We created this wardrobe with the help of parametric design software, an organic void was created with rows of fabric interweaving in plan and a smooth curve in section using 3000 strips of varying heights. The hanging strips soften often harsh acoustic qualities experienced in a building of this type and deaden the echoes resonating throughout the space. We hoped to use the entrance as a cleansing experience refreshing the palette before the impact of the vibrant exhibits within.
